Sun and Pets in the Summer: Where Grass Fails and Turf Thrives

August 22, 2019

Every summer you get frustrated at the brown patches in your yard. No matter how much grass seed you sow, the same thing happens every year–you put all this hard work into your yard, only to have it burned to a crisp by the sun or your pet’s doing their business on it. Whether you fall under one or both of these categories, you might want to consider artificial turf for pets to remedy the struggle.

Damage to the Grass

Your pets can cause significant damage to your yard. Their urine is toxic to the grass, which will leave brown spots all over the yard. The problem is even worse if you have a small area, as just a few spots take up a more noticeable surface area than they would in a bigger yard. By the end of summer, it may seem like your lawn is more brown than green.

Another problem you may be facing is the sun causing damage to your grass, especially if it’s a dry summer. The heat will dry up the grass, leaving bare spots that are quite noticeable and not visually appealing. What started out in the spring as a lush green lawn turns into a bare brown space. If you want to prevent this problem, you must spend a lot of time watering your lawn. If you decide to baby it like this, you’ll have to prepare for the beast it is to take on. You have to be careful about when to water because watering at night increases the risk of fungi due to the cooler temperatures, which can also harm your lawn. If you live on a hill, the water may run off before it has time to penetrate to the roots of the grass.

To fix these issues with your lawn, you can sow new grass seed or have it re-sod. These are only temporary fixes as long as you have pets or unless you spend a lot of time watering the lawn.

Turf to the Rescue

You’ve seen the bright green turf on baseball fields, but you may not be aware that it also works for home yards. Fake grass for pets can create that same lush green look you had in spring, but it won’t fade or turn brown once summer rolls around.

Artificial turf looks and feels like real grass, but without the upkeep and hassle. Pets can play on it and it won’t turn brown. The sun won’t damage the turf or leave bare spots. Once it’s installed, your upkeep is minimal.

Other Benefits of Turf

Artificial turf doesn’t need to be watered, which means you’ll have a lower water bill each month during the summer. It also eliminates that job from your schedule so you can spend more time enjoying your lawn than taking care of it.

If there’s a severe drought, you don’t need to worry when you have a turf lawn. It won’t turn brown from lack of water, and you won’t be limited if the city or county imposes a water usage restriction.

If you’re challenged by pets or the hot summer sun to keep your lawn looking good, you might want to consider replacing the grass with artificial turf for a low-maintenance solution. Turf will have your neighbors talking about how awesome your yard looks and commending you for all the hard work you must have done to get it that way.
